About Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI)
Initiated in 2010 by The Michael J. Fox Foundation, along with a group of academic researchers and industry collaborators, PPMI focuses on identifying essential biological markers for the onset and progression of Parkinson’s disease. Since its inception, the initiative has expanded to include numerous partners, including additional research sites, scientists, clinicians, industry specialists, philanthropic organizations, and crucially, study volunteers. These collaborations have established PPMI as a foundational element in Parkinson’s research. The analysis of its publicly accessible data and biosample library has enhanced the understanding of the disease and contributed to the design of numerous therapeutic trials.
A decade into its journey, PPMI announced a major expansion, aiming to nearly triple its clinical enrollment and incorporate online data collection from tens of thousands of participants. The initiative is committed to continuing its exploration of biological and clinical changes across the disease spectrum, with a focus on identifying early signs in individuals at risk, to pinpoint intervention opportunities as soon as possible.
